No matter how many times we see it, there’s something so inspiring about witnessing a Black woman embrace her natural curls. And while speaking with Vogue this week, our girl Keke Palmer did just that.

In a recent “Getting ready with me” video, Keke took viewers behind the scenes of her self-care routine and skincare regimen while discussing the personal relationship she has developed with her hair.

Keke didn’t just show us how to look better; she dropped gems on self-acceptance, cultural pride, and how to work a flexi rod set like a pro.

‘I just love all the things we can do with our hair’: Keke Palmer is embraces her natural curls.

Keke admitted that it took her time to truly appreciate her hair. And if we’re honest, this natural hair journey is all too real for many of us. “I think it took me a long time to get to the place of being able to really appreciate my hair in all its uniqueness and what it can do—and only it can do,” she shared on the video.

“I think it took me a long time to get to the place of being able to really appreciate my hair in all its uniqueness and what it can do and only it can do,” she revealed during her Vogue feature. Now, Keke approaches her natural hair with joy rather than obligation.

“When I wear a wig, it’s not because I feel like I have to, but because I want to do something different that I don’t want to do to my natural hair,” the Password host said. “And when I wear my natural hair, I actually have a different relationship with it.” As natural hair chameleons, this is the energy we need. We slay in them all, whether a wig, a twist out, or an afro.

It wasn’t just Keke’s personal journey that helped her embrace her kinks and coils. Turns out, her role in Jordan Peele’s Nope was a game-changer.

Peele encouraged her to rock her natural hair throughout the movie, and Keke says it was a full-circle moment. “We have to showcase all versions of beauty—and we hear this all the time. But it really is true, she said.

A new mom, Keke, is thinking about the next generation. “I thank him [Jordan] for allowing me to wear my hair like that in that movie and giving that platform and that stage. It continues to push forward, so that another little girl like me—maybe her mom has an easier time telling her, like, ‘Your curls are beautiful. You are beautiful because she’s seen it.‘”

No Gatekeeping: Keke Palmer shares her flexi rod routine and essential hair products

If you’ve ever wondered how Keke gets her natural curls looking so poppin’, Sis let us in on her secret: flexi rods. “When I started doing natural hair, I wasn’t sure how to wear it, she confessed. “A lot of people do wash-and-go styles. A lot of people do twist-outs. But I wanted to figure out what was the style for me, and I realized that I really loved the flexi rod set.

Keke broke down her regimen on camera. She gave all the tea on the products and even showed how to achieve her signature look. Whether you’re a wash-and-go girl or a twist-out queen, Keke’s flexi rod set might inspire your next hair experiment.

Keke’s chat with the legacy fashion publication comes as part of a press tour promoting her new memoir, Master of Me. True to form, the actress-singer-author has been dropping gems across her interviews. From discussing work-life balance with Essence to opening up about past relationships on CBS Mornings, Keke is a shining example of vulnerability and resilience.
